Abstract: This paper documents the historical developments of free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE)systems, describes seven FACE systems that are currently studying impacts of greenhouse gases on forest ecosystems, and outlines major remaining research questions in which FACE studies can help provide insights into future forest ecosystems under elevated greenhouse gases.
