Research Context: This typeface design is the artistic output of Maarten Renckens' PhD titled 'Visual prosody for readers younger than 18 with a hearing impairment'.
Description: Vivace is the typeface designed based on the results of Maarten Renckens' PhD-research. – Based on the concept of spacial frequencies, a non-stressful pattern is created: non-vertical strokes, strokes on a irregular distance, thicker strokes and a lower contrast. These design choices disperse the black concentrations of the stripe pattern. With this new pattern in mind, letters are designed in order to enhance the reading comfort. – The difference with Matilda, the typeface of Ann Bessemans, is that the design did not start from the classical convention of type and then tries to disturb the stripe pattern, but the design of Vivace came from the concept of spacial frequencies itself, probably making it the first typeface that started as a stripe pattern and turned that into letters. – After this, based on Maarten's work on visual prosody, different variations on this typeface, the fonts, are designed to visualise the three speech variations loudness, duration and pitch. With these different fonts, speech expression can be visualised to support the reading aloud. For the first time, both directions of these variations are included: a louder/softer voice is visualised by bolder/lighter fonts, a faster/slower voice is visualised by condensed/extended fonts and a higher/lower voice is visualised by vertically up/down moved fonts. Vivace also includes a larger space to indicate the pauzes in the speech. With all these variations, this typeface becomes a tool to visualise speech expression, enabling 1) talking about speech variations, 2) comprehending speech variations and 3) performing speech variations correctly.
