Abstract: Due to its heterogeneous and quasi-brittle character, the computational analysis of masonry poses many challenges. Particularly when a mesoscale masonry model is used, i.e. a model in which joints and bricks are modelled as separate entities [1, 2, 3], special precautions should be taken in order to avoid rigid body modes of the bricks. In this contribution we therefore propose a GFEM-based mesoscopic masonry model in which non-critical joints and their corresponding enhanced degrees of freedom are deactivated, ensuring bricks cannot detach from the surrounding structure. A robust path-following solution algorithm is also presented, in which the enhanced degrees of freedom of the model are used as control variables. The performance of the proposed modelling strategies is demonstrated by several numerical examples, including shear wall and settlement tests.
