|Abstract: ||Supply chain learning (SCL) as reciprocal learning between interdependent partners becomes increasingly important for joint system optimization and development in highly complex business situations. There is a growing consensus that the overall effectiveness and development of a supply chain is a function of the willingness and capacity of its individual partners to build and sustain reciprocal learning relationships through which new knowledge and value is co-created . Increasingly, inter-organizational entities or collaborative task-systems are being set up in supply chains in order to collaborate on complex and open-ended problems/opportunities The purpose of this paper is to present a framework for understanding how SCL can be successfully developed and sustained.
We look at SCL as “reciprocal inter-firm learning” , defined as learning where the knowledge and expertise of co-operating parties blends to jointly solve problems, take advantage of opportunities, develop new shared knowledge, or structure new developments. The reasons for collaboration are task-related, but the parties share the process intention to do this in a learning way: there is a willingness to spend time and effort together to learn jointly and improve the way this learning is done while working on a common task. In this learning mode, each supply chain partner acts as a co-inquirer and co-creator within a peer relationship characterized by reciprocity between the parties’ contributions.|
